Highclere Castle

No other Castle quite sums up the feeling of the time of when it was built as this one does. 1842 – the date of accepted design MDCCCXLII is over the front door. The house is dramatic, set within a remarkable landscape of rolling hills; it captures the eye as well as the imagination. It’s history is no less dramatic and includes famous architects, landscape experts, famous artists, political figures, Earls, ancient Egypt, a lesser important Pharoah, a curse, and a film company! This is the home of the Carnavon family and of course, the fictional family from the television and now film of “Downton Abbey”. Above the windows there is an inscription. The translation is “The one I serve”, but which “one” is not made clear. Why not walk through these well-known rooms and take a stroll through the grounds. You will be enthralled.
