Lyme Regis
It may be that the visitor to Lyme Regis has come on a literary pilgrimage, following in the footsteps of a literary giantess. They may also have come to these particular shores because of the delightful seafront, and the fantastic museum that informs visitors about the fossils found in this area and the way of life that has gone. Jane Austen’s words from “Persuasion”: “the principal street almost hurrying into the water, the Walk to the Cobb, skirting round the pleasant little bay, which, in the season, is animated with bathing machines and company…are what the stranger’s eye will seek.”
Much is still there, but bathing machines are no longer available for taking to the sea and the Assembly Rooms no longer exist giving way to a car-park. But, the visitor will still be entranced by this delightful town with it’s pink houses and it’s gentle busyness.
