Blenheim Palace

Blenheim is the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Marlborough. Originally built by the first Duke, John Churchill from funds given to him from a “grateful nation” following victory against the French at the battle of Blenheim in 1704.

It is the only non Royal residence to be able to hold the title of Palace. Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh the building project caused controversy and led to the fall from grace of the Duke and his architect . Falling into ruins at one stage the house was saved by the marriage of the 9th Duke to Consuelo Vanderbilt, one of Americas wealthiest familys.

The house is still the home of the Churchill now Spencer Churchills and was the birthplace of its famous son Sir Winston Churchill.
