Romsey

Standing at the 20ft statue of Lord Palmerston, (19th century Prime Minister), in the middle of Romsey with the surrounding market, the shops, the Town hall, The White Horse and the Abbey directly behind, it is clear that Romsey is a small town. It is a small town steeped in history. Why did Romsey prosper? This town is where the woollen industry grew and powered Romsey’s growth during the Middle Ages. Maybe it is not for the history that Romsey beckons visitors, but for those market stalls, those independent shops and the Abbey itself. The famous Hillier Gardens are up the road – a short distance away, and Lord Palmerston’s house, “Broadlands”, is situated at the main entrance to the town.
