Southampton
The waters at Southampton are unlike any other for they sweep into the Port for a magnificent 17 out of 24 hours making enough high water for visiting Ships. It was the water that provided the healing waters of the Chalybeate in the eighteenth century making Southampton a place to see and be seen in. Jane Austen danced here on her eighteenth birthday in the Dolphin Hotel. Long before, a Castle wall was built with an entry for the merchants who appeared with wine and woad paying their taxes as they entered this international port. Walk the ancient walls and through the Bargate, the entry gate to the city, and experience what life was like for our sea-going ancestors.
