Surrounding Salisbury in Wessex
The area around Salisbury is part of the ancient kingdom known as Wessex. From 600-900AD Britain was divided into seven tribal kingdoms known as a Heptarchy. Wessex along with Mercia and Northumbria were three of the strongest and most powerful tribal kingdoms at this time.
We still refer to Wiltshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Dorset and parts of Oxfordshire, as the area of Wessex. We know that these ancient demarcations had fluid borders depending on what tribes were in power. Now we refer to Wessex in connection to the writer Thomas Hardy. He is known as the Wessex writer.
The area we guide in extends to Sussex and includes Windsor Castle. All of the sites that we guide in are within an hour and an half’s journey away. As you can see the Wessex area is rich in history, archaeology, literature, flora and fauna and so much more. They are all close and within easy reach and we can tailor your tour to suit your needs.
